Highway 99 runs along the western edge with exits at Elk Grove Blvd and Bond Road. Grant Line Road heads south toward the casino corridor and north toward Rancho Cordova. SacRT buses cover the main corridors, and downtown Sacramento is about 20 minutes away.

Elk Grove began in 1850 as a stage stop on the Monterey Trail — the Elk Grove House & Stage Stop served Gold Rush–era travelers between Sacramento and Stockton. The name nods to the elk herds that once roamed the oak groves near the Cosumnes River. The townsite shifted to the railroad in 1868, and Old Town's brick storefronts date to that era. Elk Grove incorporated as a city in 2000 and quickly became one of the fastest-growing cities in America.

The east side feels like the Elk Grove locals grew up with — mature trees, Friday football, a real main street, and neighbors who've been here for generations. Newer pockets blend in around the edges, but the core keeps its small-town rhythm: Saturday market mornings, summer concerts in the park, and the whole city turning out for the Pumpkin Festival.

Start in Old Town: coffee at Rescate, a walk past the brick storefronts, lunch at Todo Un Poco or Old Town Pizza, then an evening stroll around the lake at Elk Grove Regional Park. If it's October, the Giant Pumpkin Festival is non-negotiable.

Few Sacramento suburbs can point to an actual 1850 stage stop, but Elk Grove can. The Elk Grove House served travelers on the Monterey Trail decades before the city incorporated in 2000. That history is why Old Town still feels like a real town center — and why locals are so protective of it as the rest of the city grows around it.
